Cessation

National and international data on smoking cessation

According to the 2007 Gallup survey[1] nearly half of the smokers (45%) would like to quit smoking, which rate is to some extent less than it was in 2006 (51%) and in 2004 (50%).  Compared to 2004 (63%) and 2006 (60%), readiness to quit among smokers with higher education decreased (48%).  The rate of those people, ready to give up this habit decreases with age and especially above 50 years.  The majority of people who want to quit (81%) have already tried to do so, every second of them in the past year. Only a minority of them (17%) used some cessation tool for it.

According to 2007 data, three quarters of smokers (77%) were already  asked by a doctor if they smoke, but the rate of those who were also advised to quit is much less (55%). People living in Budapest are more likely to be advised to do so, compared to those living in villages. Mostly people above 60 years were advised by doctors to quit, but people above 30 were also more likely to get this advice than younger ones.

According to the 2009 Eurobarometer[2]  report, in the past year 14% of smokers tried to quit more than once, 13% of them two to five times, and 1% of them more often than five times.
